With three runs required off the last ball, it felt like a similar tale would unfurl in front of South Africa Champions against Australia, on July 31 (Thursday) in the semi-final of World Championship of Legends 2025.
However, that’s where AB de Villiers’ pinpoint throw from the deep helped South Africa break their rotten luck against Australia at the very ground, with a one-run win to progress to the WCL final. Coming to the delivery, Australian all-rounder Dan Christian had smacked the ball hard to the mid-on boundary, and it seemed like two runs were a certainty to take the game to a super over.
But a combination of de Villiers’ supreme athleticism and Wayne Parnell’s clutch collect and hit, helped South Africa to a one-run win. Ironically, it was at this very ground that all those years back in 1999 where South Africa lost the World Cup semi-final clash against Australia, with Allan Donald involved in the mess-up.
This time around, though, Donald was seen celebrating the close win in the dressing room, as South Africa will now face Pakistan in the competition’s final, after India pulled out of their semi-final clash against the cross-border rivals.
