Australia’s opener Travis Head made a mockery of England’s 316-run target in the first One-Day International at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on September 19 (Thursday). The left-hander smoked 154* off 129 deliveries as Australia hunted down the target with six overs and seven wickets to spare.
Earlier, thanks to Ben Duckett’s 91-ball 95 and Will Jacks’ 56-ball 62, England were 213/2 at one stage. However, that’s when Adam Zampa, Marnus Labuschagne and Head scalped eight wickets between them and bundled England out for 315 in 49.4 overs, with Australian spinners picking up nine wickets for the first time in ODI history.
Australia lost Mitchell Marsh early but Steven Smith and Cameron Green scored 32 each to give Head some support. The latter smashed 20 fours and five maximums, while Labuschagne hit 77* off 61 deliveries. The two put on an unbeaten stand of 148 and only left the field once the job was done.
