Joe Root’s 203-ball 146 and Gus Atkinson’s hard-hitting 81-ball 74* put England in a commanding position on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s on August 29 (Thursday).
Ben Duckett (40), Harry Brook (33), and Jamie Smith (21) got starts but couldn’t convert them into something substantial. The hosts were 216/6 at one stage before Root and Atkinson joined hands and put on 92 runs for the seventh wicket.

Root scored his 33rd Test hundred, the joint most for England alongside Sir Alastair Cook. He fell to Milan Rathnayake, but Atkinson continued to throw his bat around and slam five fours and four maximums.
Matthew Potts is unbeaten on 20 and has already added 50 runs for the eighth wicket with Atkinson. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara and Rathnayake picked up two wickets each.
England were 358/7 at the end of day one.
