Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) needed a win against Punjab Kings (PBKS) today to stay close to the top of the table, and they eventually made it 5 wins in 8 by registering a comfortable seven-wicket win.
As it turned out, it was a very easy win for RCB, who chased down 158 with 7 balls to spare, without breaking a sweat.
There were no major talking points from the match itself, however, there was a tiny bit of controversy in the immediate aftermath of the contest.
As soon as Jitesh Sharma hit the winning runs, thumping Nehal Wadhera for a six, Virat Kohli, at the non-striker’s end, turned towards PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer and let out an animated fist pump. Kohli pulled out the celebration so quickly that it felt pre-planned.
Admittedly unhappy with the fist pump at his face, Iyer walked towards Kohli to address the issue. Iyer initially seemed to say a few words to Kohli, expressing his dissatisfaction, but it did not take long for the issue to diffuse and the mood to lighten. Eventually, the pair buried the hatchet by exchanging a very sporty fist pump.
While it’s unclear what actually prompted Kohli to celebrate the way he did, certain reports claim that the former RCB skipper was ‘giving it back’ to Iyer, who is believed to have taunted the RCB crowd in the aftermath of Punjab’s win at the Chinnaswamy on Friday.
