It’s Sachin Tendulkar and nobody else ahead as Joe Root, today (July 25) in Manchester, became the second-highest run-getter in Test history.
Root started the fourth Test against India behind all of Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting, but he went past all three legendary batters in the space of a few hours to become the second-highest run-getter in the format’s history.
And in what was a beautiful moment, it was Ponting, the man who surpassed, who was on air the moment Root scripted history.
“A magnificent moment in history,” Ponting said on air.
“Just the one more to go now, about 2,500 runs behind, but the way that his career has gone over the last four or five years, there’s absolutely no reason why not.”
Root, on the day, also brought up his 38th Test century. Only Ponting, Kallis and Tendulkar have more tons than him in Test cricket.
