Sunil Gavaskar, one of India’s legendary batters and an all-time great, gifted current India captain Shubman Gill a jersey that has the initials of SG (Sanspareils Greenlands) at the end of Day 3 of the fifth Test against England at the Oval on August 2nd (Saturday). The moment was SG met SG, as Sunil Gavaskar’s initials are SG and so are Shubman Gill’s and the apparel brand company’s.
The gift was preserved by Gavaskar so that he could give it to Gill when he got past the tally of 774 runs, the most by an Indian batter in a Test series, held by him since 1971. However, Gill remained behind it by 20 runs, accumulating 754 runs in his debut series as India’s Test captain.
Gavaskar gifted the jersey that the sports company had made for him to Gill. Gifting it, he said, "I have got a little gift for you. I had got in anticipation of you getting past [the tally of 774 runs] but…at least you have now got an aim for the future series. This is a shirt which was made for me, Patna nhi tumhe fit hogi ya nahi [don’t if it will fit you].”
The 76-year-old also presented Gill with a cap that was personally signed by him. While gifting the cap, Gavaskar said, “Here’s a cap that I have personally signed, and I have given it to very few people.”
The former India captain and the first man to reach the 10,000 Test runs club further said that he was very happy with the way Gill captained in the last hour of play against England and with the fact that he moved a fielder right before Siraj bowled the unpayable yorker to Zak Crawley and took his wicket to give India the edge at the end of Day 3.
Promising that he would be rooting for India in his lucky white jacket on Day 4, Gavaskar said, "Tomorrow, I am going to wear my lucky jacket which I wore in Australia, the white jacket for the Gabba Test. I have got it only for that. All the best, God bless you.”
At the Gabba in 2021, which Gavaskar mentioned in the video, India had come with the series tied 1-1 and then chased down 329 with a young team, which included Gill, who had made his Test debut in that series.
