WATCH: Shubman Gill’s Short-Ball Tactic Works As Jamie Smith Holes Out
Indian skipper Gill has already shown glimpses of a great Test captain with his proactive decision-making
It might be just his second Test as captain, but Shubman Gill has plenty of experience leading teams in the past. Gill showed another impressive display of leadership when he set up a perfect trap for England’s best batter in the Test, Jamie Smith, on July 6 (Sunday) in the second Test at Edgbaston.
After Smith had troubled India enough, with 88 off just 98 deliveries, the Indian skipper asked Prasidh Krishna to bowl short at the right-hander. While Prasidh didn’t quite land them right, his bowling partner, Akash Deep, was then given that responsibility.
At first, it didn’t stop Smith early on in the over, when he smashed two stunning sixes. However, later, it ended his eventful stay as Akash Deep executed his white-ball skills to perfection with a slower short ball that Smith hit straight down Washington Sundar’s throat.
Unfortunately for Smith, he couldn’t go past Andy Flower’s tally for most runs in a Test by a wicketkeeper, but fortunately for India, they finally got rid of Smith in the Test. At the other end, it was pure joy for Akash Deep, who brought up his first five-wicket haul in Tests, in only his first Test in England.
