Australia’s 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas and 36-year-old Virat Kohli, on December 26 (Thursday), got into a tussle on day one of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. There was even a minor physical contact made between the two players.
The incident occurred after the end of the 10th over after Konstas had just taken down Jasprit Bumrah for 14 runs in an over. During the 10th over, Mohammed Siraj exchanged a few words with the debutant, who even got a long stare from Kohli, to which he didn’t respond.
However, when the over ended, Konstas took off his gloves and started walking towards his partner, Usman Khawaja. That’s when Kohli started walking in Konstas’ direction, switching lanes to shoulder bump the Test debutant.
The Indian star turned back and threw a few words at Konstas, who didn’t shy away and gave it back to Kohli. With the tension rising, Khawaja and the main umpire had to separate the two.
In the very next over, Konstas whacked Bumrah for 18 runs - his most expensive over in Test cricket. The youngster surely managed to rattle the Indian players with his strokeplay.
Talking about the incident during the drinks break, Konstas told Fox Cricket: "Whatever happens on the field stays on the field.”
The shoulder-barge incident is now surely set to catch the attention of match referee Andy Pycroft.
Konstas eventually got out to Ravindra Jadeja after slamming 60 off 65 deliveries, becoming the second-youngest Test half-centurion for Australia in the process.
