Washington Sundar, who was brought into the playing 11 by the Gujarat Titans against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, April 6 (mainly for his batting), did not bowl even a single over. But he came really good with his batting.
Batting at number four for the Titans after struggling at 15/2 in their chase of 153, having lost Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler early on, Sundar started to attack the opposition from word go.
He played some brilliant shots, but one in particular, an innovative scoop over the wicketkeeper against Simarjeet Singh, was an amazing one to watch.
Not known for scoops or other innovative shots like reverse sweeps and ramp shots, it was a surprisingly refreshing approach by the Tamil Nadu all-rounder against the right-arm pacer, going across and picking it up from length and then depositing it over the boundary.
That scoop was only Sundar's third successful ramp shot out of eight attempts in his entire IPL career. On two occasions, he has even been dismissed for trying to play a ramp shot or a scoop.
However, it was not just the scoop; Sundar was brilliant throughout the game, surpassing his previous best score of 40 and scoring 49 off 29, striking at 168.69. He added 90 off 56 balls with skipper Shubman Gill for the fourth wicket.
