Touted as a potential dark horse for the title ahead of the season, Sunrisers Hyderabad have endured a campaign to forget, finishing bottom of the table, having won just 4 matches all season. The Orange Army would ideally have wanted to sign off on a high but that did not happen as the Wankhede, they were convincingly outclassed by a rampant Mumbai Indians side who, courtesy a stunning Cameron Green ton, chased down 201 with 12 balls to spare.
SRH certainly would want to forget about IPL 2023, but skipper Aiden Markram insisted that, despite severely underperforming as a unit, there’s been plenty of learnings from this season.
“It's been a great challenge this year, great group of guys, we are on the younger side, great bunch to be around. We have learnt a lot as a team,” Markram said at the post-match presentation.
On the day, SRH did cross 200 with the bat after being inserted into bat, thanks to fine showings from Vivrant Sharma (69) and Mayank Agarwal (83), but Markram admitted that 200 was never going to be enough at the Wankhede against this Mumbai Indians batting unit.
“It was a decent effort with the bat today. You need a lot more than 200 against MI. Boys played well, unfortunately ended up on the wrong side,” he said.
“It was an opportunity for the guys and they grabbed it with both hands.” (on Vivrant and Mayank performing).”
Silver linings for SRH have been few and far between, but still, IPL 2023 was a season in which they had two exceptional performers on either front - Heinrich Klaasen with the bat and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the ball. Markram was full of praise for the duo.
“Someone like Klassy (Klaasen) and Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar), did consistently well throughout the season.”
SRH have now finished bottom twice in the last three seasons. IPL 2021 saw them pick up just 6 points from their 14 games.
