Shubman Gill, the batter, went missing in his first season as Gujarat Titans captain during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. However, come the 2025 edition of the IPL, Gill has already devised a plan to separate his batting from his position as captain.
"The more we keep batting and captaincy separate, the better it is," Gill said in a press conference on March 19 (Wednesday).
"In my experience, it is good if I don't mix it. When I go out to bat, the best thing for me is to play as a batter and make decisions accordingly. Captaincy role comes after I am dismissed, or when we are fielding or [are] off the field. When I am batting, I focus only on batting,” explained the 25-year-old.
Gill could score only 426 runs in IPL 2024 and, as a result, was not picked in India’s T20I team that went on to win the T20 World Cup.
IPL 2024 was the worst season for Gill, the batter ever since his association with the Titans, as he scored with a strike rate of 131 in the powerplay, which was second lowest among all batters with at least 150 runs in the first six overs.
To improve upon that, Gill would embark on a special endeavour in IPL 2025. Explaining that, he said, “The plan is to score as many runs as possible, and lose as few wickets as possible. As a batsman, it is my responsibility to bat in a way that allows us to maximise the powerplay. That is what I strive for, and hopefully, this time we rectify the errors from last season.”
