CSK are struck with an injury yet again in the camp as wicketkeeper-batter Vansh Bedi has been replaced with Urvil Patel, on May 5 (Monday).
Urvil Patel was part of the Gujarat Titans squad in IPL 2023, but after getting released ahead of IPL 2024, he went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction last month. However, the 26-year-old made a serious statement at the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, smashing the second-fastest T20 century in history against Tripura before following it up with 115* (41) against Uttarakhand.
Only Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan (27 balls) has scored a century at a quicker pace than Urvil in the history of the format. Not just that, in 2023, Urvil cracked the second-fastest List A ton by an Indian on the very same date, where he hit it in 41 deliveries.
During that knock against Uttarakhand, the right-handed opener smashed eight fours and 11 sixes, helping Gujarat knock the 183-run target down in 13.1 overs. He also had a blazing cameo against Karnataka, plundering 33 off 14 balls.
Overall, Urvil had a strike rate of 229.9 in the 2024-25 SMAT and smashed a six every 4.7 balls. Not just that, he hit the most sixes in SMAT 2024-25, with 29 sixes coming in just six appearances.
In his T20 career itself, the right-hander has barely batted outside the top three, with 35 of his appearances coming in as an opener. As an opener, Urvil has smashed 951 runs, striking at 180.8, with three fifties and two hundreds.
The 26-year-old is also a wicketkeeper; he kept wickets in each of the team’s six matches, and has a good record behind the stumps, with 34 catches and six stumpings.
