Why Jasprit Bumrah Won't Be India's Vice-Captain On England Tour?
One of Shubman Gill or Rishabh Pant could be given the role of vice-captain
India’s ace paceman Jasprit Bumrah won’t be given any leadership role and is also unlikely to feature in all five Tests in England, starting on June 20. According to a report on the Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants a player who will play all five Tests in England.
When India toured Australia, Bumrah served as Rohit Sharma’s deputy and also captained India to their only win during the series. The 31-year-old featured in all five games and ended up getting a back injury due to extra workload.

And that’s something the Indian team management wants to avoid in the upcoming series against England. One of Shubman Gill or Rishabh Pant could be given the role of vice-captain. Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are the other batters likely to be certain starters.
“We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain should be certain and play all five Tests,” the sources said.
Bumrah missed the first four games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 but has been stunning for the Mumbai Indians (MI) since making his return. The right-armer has claimed 11 wickets in seven games at an economy of less than 7.
Rohit and Co. were whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand at home and then went on to lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia after 10 years.
