Why Was Rohit Sharma Not Given A Fitting Send-Off? Former India Batter Asks

With Rohit out of the picture, India will have to look for a new captain and also a new opening batter

Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket after a poor run of form in the home series against New Zealand and then the Border-Gavaskar Tests Down Under. While India look to fill his void as a captain and as an opening batter, former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary believes that Rohit should have received a fitting farewell.

"If Rohit Sharma had retired not on social media but on the field after playing, it would have been a more fitting send-off,” Tiwary told Cricbuzz.

“It would've felt better for all of us, too. Just look at his record as a Test captain, it's very good. He's won 12 Tests, lost 9, and drawn 3. So there's no doubt about his success rate — it's solid."

Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and three T20Is for India between 2008 and 2015 claims Rohit was quite a popular figure in the dressing room with most of the players saying that they enjoy playing under him.

"He was a very popular leader among this group of boys. If you see, even the young players wanted to play under him. We always hear them say in their interviews, 'I really enjoyed playing under Rohit Sharma's captaincy,' Tiwary said.

As it turns out, Rohit's final Test was the Boxing Day Test against Australia in 2024. He stood down for the final Test in Sydney, allowing Jasprit Bumrah to lead the side.
