Wiaan Mulder’s dream year as a cricketer continues to get better as the 27-year-old, today in Bulawayo, became the third ever South African in history, and the first in 70 years, to smash a century on captaincy debut in Test cricket. Top-order batter Jackie McGlew was the last to achieve this feat, back in 1955.
South Africa batters to hit a century on captaincy debut in Tests
Herbie Taylor (109) vs ENG, Durban, 1913
Jackie McGlew (104*) vs ENG, Manchester, 1955
Wiaan Mulder (100*) vs ZIM, Bulawayo, 2025
Taking over captaincy in the absence of regular stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj, Mulder walked in at 24/2 in the 14th over and blasted a stroke-filled 116-ball ton that consisted of 14 boundaries.
He got to his century in the second session, scripting history in the process. With that, Mulder’s extraordinary conversion rate continues. He now has passed 50 four times in Tests, and converted 3 of those fifties into tons.
He’s now smashed back-to-back tons in Tests as well, with him posting 147 in the second innings of the first Test against Zimbabwe.
The 27-year-old now is averaging 62.22 with the bat since the start of 2024.
