It was there for the taking. The world record of 400*, achieved by Brian Lara in 2004, was within touching distance for South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder, who went to lunch on day two against Zimbabwe batting on 367* off just 334 balls. It was expected that he would come back after lunch and give it a proper crack at setting a new record.
However, in a rather shocking move, Mulder, the stand-in captain, declared the innings at lunch, opting to not chase the all-time record set by Lara against England 21 years ago.
Regardless, Mulder finds himself in the history books. His 367* is the highest score in an away Test by any batter ever. It’s the fifth-highest individual score in Test history and the highest ever by a South African. Hashim Amla’s 311* against England at The Oval in 2012 was previously the highest score achieved by a South African in Test cricket.
Mulder, today, also became the first batter in Test history to score a triple century in his first ever innings as captain.
