With a Women’s Premier League (WPL) cycle coming to an end, it was time for the franchises to hit a reset. While most teams retained their core, UP Warriorz let go of most of their squad, including ace Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma, which came as a brutal shock.
The all-rounder finished the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup with 215 runs, picked up 22 wickets and was named as the Player of the Tournament. Deepti being available at the auction makes her an enticing option for all the franchises.
Former Indian captain Anjum Chopra believes that the Gujarat Giants should definitely consider picking the all-rounder in their setup. Despite the talent that the Giants possessed, they haven’t yet delivered a telling performance in the first three seasons of the competition.
“Gujarat Giants should definitely consider Deepti Sharma in the mega-auction. Delhi Capitals might also target her as an Indian player who strengthens both batting and bowling. UP Warriorz could be the third team interested after Gujarat and Delhi in acquiring her services,” Chopra said on JioHotstar, reported The Indian Express.
The Giants have just retained the Australian duo of Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney, letting go of the young sensation, Phoebe Litchfield. Former Indian batter Veda Krishnamurthy also jumped in, stating that the 28-year-old Deepti would be in ‘high demand’ at the upcoming WPL mega auction.
“Deepti Sharma is a proven match-winner from earlier WPL seasons, performing brilliantly with both bat and ball. She also won the Player of the Tournament award in the recently concluded Women’s ODI World Cup. Her demand will definitely be high in the mega-auction, and every franchise will be watching her closely,” she said in a show for JioHotstar.
WPL 2026 mega auction will feature 277 players, and will be held on November 27 in New Delhi, with UP Warriorz having the highest purse (INR 14.5 crore).
