Shubman Gill succeeded Rohit Sharma as the Test skipper of the senior men’s Indian side. He will be leading India in the five-Test series that’s beginning in England from June 20. Gill will become the 37th player to captain India in Test cricket in the process.
Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, congratulated the 25-year-old from Punjab and credited Yuvraj and Gill’s father for the success he has achieved.
“The credit for Shubman Gill's performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” Yograj told ANI.
“If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh's guidance will play and has played an essential role in that.”
It’s notable that Yuvraj worked on Gill’s game with him during the lockdown in Chandigarh, where the newly minted Test skipper also resides after his father moved his family from his village for Gill’s cricket career.
“Yuvi Paaji has been a mentor to me, like a big brother,” Gill had said earlier on his bonding with the former India southpaw.
“With him during the lockdown and even after that, he’s worked on my batting. My dad has been my primary coach since I started playing cricket. I think making Yuvi paaji proud is definitely a special feeling for me.”
Yuvraj also congratulated Gill after he became skipper of the Test side on May 24.
“They say with great power comes great responsibility and I know you’ll carry both with pride! Here’s to taking the team to new heights – onwards and upwards! Congratulations @shubmangill," he posted on Instagram.
