Now, if Gill wants to be the best, it’s only fair to compare him to the best - and when it comes to Indian captaincy, there’s no one bigger than Virat Kohli. While no one can predict the future, Gill has already made a strong statement with the bat in his first two Tests as captain.
Here we look at some of Kohli’s records Gill broke at Edgbaston.
Most runs for a captain in his first two Tests
Kohli had a fantastic start with the bat to his captaincy tenure, slamming scores of 115, 141, 147 and 46. The batting maestro smashed 449 runs in his first two Tests as captain, and Gill has broken that record by a pretty good margin - 585 runs. He also became the only batter alongside Kohli to have three tons in his first two Tests as skipper.
Highest score for an Indian captain in Tests
Before Gill hammered 269 in the first innings in Birmingham, the top-three Test scores by an Indian captain belonged to Kohli - 254*, 243 and 235. Overall, the record belongs to Brian Lara, who smoked 400* against England in Antigua in 2004.
Best score for India No.4 in Tests
Kohli scored an unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019 to break his idol Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the highest score by a No.4 Indian batter - 248* vs Bangladesh in 2004. And it’s Gill now who has gone past his idol’s best Test score.
