The umpiring in the Lord’s Test between England and India was criticised a lot as not one but six decisions overall were overturned by the third umpire. Four of those successful reviews were against Paul Reiffel and in all four cases, it was India at the receiving end of the false decisions.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his displeasure over Reiffel's umpiring in general, and pointed out how he always is quick to raise his finger when India are batting.
“My experience with Paul Reiffel… I want to talk to him. I am not saying that I should tell him to give it out. It’s not like that. Whenever India bowls, he always feels it’s not out. Whenever India bats, he always feels it’s out. If it’s not against India but against all teams, then the ICC has to see towards it,” the Indian Express quoted Ashwin as saying on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat.
Ashwin also criticised the former Australian pacer’s decision against Shubman Gill when the Indian captain was given out despite there being daylight between bat and ball.
“I own a car, a sedan, which I can park through the gap between the bat and ball. It’s clear it was not out. But this is not the first time,” Ashwin said.
“My father was watching the match with me. And he told me, ‘whenever Paul Reiffel comes, India will not win.’ Even Mike Atherton and Nasser Hussain said the umpires could have acted a bit firmly with players taking time,” he added.
