DC post the highest total at Brabourne before Ashwin’s out of the blue thinking

A few notable stats from Match 19 & 20 of IPL 2022 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals at Brabourne and Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede

The fourth double header day of IPL 2022 and both matches were won by the teams defending. Across the four double headers, patterns have been even. In two double headers, teams chasing won and in another two, teams defending.

Delhi smash the highest total

Delhi’s openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, especially Warner, were in the mood today. They started off with a high after they scored 68 runs without being separated in the powerplay. Both of them registered 50+ scores.

But, it was the late surge from Shardul Thakur (29* off 11 balls) that propelled Delhi to a total of 215/5. This was not only the highest total of this season, but also the highest ever total at the Brabourne in the IPL. Mumbai Indians in 2010 had hoisted 212/6 in 2010, the highest then.

Varun taken to the cleaners

Kolkata’s success in the bowling department has revolved around the contribution of their spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. However, one of them went for plenty today.

Though he picked up the wicket of Prithvi, Varun conceded 44 runs in his full quota of four overs, In the IPL, this is only the second time he has conceded 40+ runs in an innings. His worst spell, 1/49 also came against Delhi in 2020. Interestingly, his high point and low point of his career have come against Delhi, His worst two spells in IPL are against Delhi and his best spell of 5/20 is also against Delhi.

The most twists and turns in the first three balls

In the history of the IPL, the first over of the second innings of Match 19, will go down as one of the most eventful first over.

Ajinkya Rahane against Mustafizur Rahman, first ball beats the inside and umpire Madan Gopal raises his finger and Rahane immediately reviews it and survives. Second ball, another in-dipper, Rahane is pinned in front and once again the umpire raises the finger, but was overturned after a referral from Rahane. The third ball, Rahane chases a wide ball and feathers it. But, none of the Delhi players appealed and Rahane survived. For the first time in the IPL, there were DRS referrals in the first two balls of an innings.

Kuldeep Yadav back at his best

After enduring a torrid run since 2019 in the IPL, Kuldeep is back with a bang in this edition of the IPL. In four matches, Kuldeep has bagged a four-wicket haul, a three-wicket haul and a two-wicket haul. Throughout this season, Kuldeep has bagged 10 wickets, which is the joint second most this season.

In his match against Kolkata, Kuldeep was the star as he bagged four wickets for 35 runs and guided Delhi to a big win. In the IPL, this is only the second time he has picked up four-plus wickets. In any case, his best spell (4/20) came against Rajasthan in 2018.

Ashwin retires himself out

Rajasthan in deep trouble at 67/4 at the end of the 10th over, Ravichandran Ashwin came into bat ahead of Ryan Parag and forged a 68-run stand for the fifth wicket with Shimron Hetmyer.

In the 19th over (18.2), as a bizarre turn of events, Ashwin walked back to the pavilion after completing a single. He retired himself out and let Parag come into bat with 10 balls left in the innings to maximize. He became the first ever batsman in IPL to be retired-out. In all T20s, he was the fourth batsman after Shahid Afridi in 2010, Sonam Tobgay in 2019 and Sunzamul Islam in 2019 to be retired out.

KL Rahul suffers his second duck of the edition

As an opener, before the start of this edition, KL Rahul had never suffered a duck in the IPL. But, in this season, in his first match against Gujarat Titans, Rahul was dismissed in the first ball of the innings.

In his match against Rajasthan, he suffered yet another duck and once again it was a golden duck and again he was dismissed in the first ball of the innings. In the IPL, KL Rahul suffered his third duck and interestingly, all his three ducks have been golden ducks. To worsen it, he became the third batsman in the IPL after Sanath Jayasuriya in 2009 and Unmukt Chand in 2013 to suffer two golden ducks in an IPL season.

Chahal reaches new heights

Rajasthan’s bowling attack has been hunting in pairs this season. Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult in the powerplay and Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal in the middle overs. However, between the spin duo, Chahal has been the leader. In fact, he is the leader among all the bowlers this season with 11 wickets.

En route his four-wicket spell against Lucknow, Chahal reached a significant milestone in the IPL. He became the sixth bowler overall and fourth Indian bowler to pick up 150 wickets in the IPL. In this innings, he went past Ashwin (146) and Sunil Narine (147).
