England bench Archer for second ODI; Australia recall Maxwell, Starc and Hazlewood

England lost the first ODI and would be keen to level the series in Leeds

England won the toss and opted to field in the second ODI of the five-match series against Australia in Leeds on Saturday (September 21). The hosts have made one change, bringing in Olly Stone for Jofra Archer, who went for 0/53 in the first ODI in Nottingham.

Australia, on the other hand, have made three changes. The renowned stars Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are back. They have replaced Cameron Green, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis. Dwarshuis made his ODI debut in Nottingham but was injured only after bowling four overs and was seen in the dressing room during Australia’s bowling with a strapping along his shoulder.

Australia are 1-0 up in the series, beating England by seven wickets. Travis Head scored an unbeaten 154, cruising Australia to the target of 316 in only 44 overs.

Playing XIs

England: Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Harry Brook ( c ), Jamie Smith (wk), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Olly Stone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid

Australia: Travis Head, Matthew Short, Mitchell Marsh ( c ), Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Hardie, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

What the captains had to say

Harry Brook, England: "Usually Headingley has a bit in it at the start, especially with overcast conditions. It’s always nice to try and put pressure on with the ball and try to chase them.”

Mitchell Marsh, Australia: "We'll have a crack, would have bowled first with overhead conditions but happy to bat. Just got to keep the selectors thinking I can bowl to get a game. The bowling will be along soon."

Conditions

The weather in Leeds is gloomy, but there was no rain at the time of the toss. Given Leeds is in the north of England and it is a day game, the ball can nip around early, as Brook suggested and explained his call to bowl first. Leeds last hosted a complete ODI game in 2019 during the ODI World Cup when India (265/3) defeated Sri Lanka (264/7) comprehensively.
