In one of the most shocking and unexpected switches in Indian domestic cricket this century, Yashasvi Jaiswal, earlier this week, confirmed that he would be playing for Goa starting from the upcoming domestic season. It is not uncommon for fringe players to move states to project their talent where they’d get game time, but this move came as a shock as Jaiswal was not only a Mumbai regular, but also a Test regular for team India.
Jaiswal quoted the captaincy offer thrown at him by Goa as the reason for the switch, but according to an India Today report, the young opener’s move might have to do with the fact that his relationship with certain senior players in Mumbai, and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) completely broke down.
According to the report, Jaiswal had grown incredibly frustrated with Mumbai’s attitude towards him, to the extent that he once kicked Ajinkya Rahane’s kitbag.
“Coach Omkar Salvi and Rahane questioned the commitment of Jaiswal, and it left the young opener fuming. People close to the situation told India Today that the 23-year-old, in anger, kicked the kitbag of captain Rahane,” the report claimed.
It is to be noted that there is prior history between Jaiswal and Rahane, with the latter once ordering the young opener off the field during the 2022 Duleep Trophy final between West Zone and South Zone. Rahane felt that Jaiswal was crossing the line with respect to sledging opponent batter Ravi Teja, due to which he ordered Jaiswal to leave the field.
Jaiswal made a solitary appearance for Mumbai in the 2024/25 domestic season, against Jammu and Kashmir, and registered scores of 4 & 26.
