India Women took the bold call of benching their frontline pacer Renuka Singh Thakur to extend their batting order in their clash against Sri Lanka, on September 30 (Tuesday). At 124/6, it seemed like India’s decision to have one less frontline bowler would cost them, but that’s where the batting depth came to their rescue.
All-rounders Deepti Sharma (53) and Amanjot Kaur (57) combined brilliantly to take India out of trouble with a 103-run partnership for the seventh wicket. If that wasn’t enough, Sneh Rana also contributed with the bat, scoring a vital 15-ball 28 to elevate India to 269/8 after their 50 overs.
In the end, that partnership turned out to be the difference maker as India won the clash in comfortable fashion by 59 runs (DLS), as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur pointed to the batting depth as a key factor for the side.
“It wasn't an easy game. We know every game is important and every game is high-pressure. In the middle overs our batters managed really well. The way Deepti and Amanjot handled the situation was outstanding to watch. Having batting depth is key for us,” Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation.
While going at an economy of 4.6, Kranti Gaud made an immediate contribution to India’s cause on her World Cup debut, scalping Hasini Perera’s wicket early on in the innings. Harmanpeet lauded Goud, stating that she’s a ‘real wicket-taking option’ for the team.
“Amanjot and Deepti were outstanding today. Overall, a good game for us. Kranti is someone who has been a wicket-taking option for us. Amanjot is someone who can support from the other end. And then Sneh Rana and Deepti's overs are crucial. They were giving breakthroughs whenever the team needed. Charani is also coming up with a good approach,” she added.
Injury concerns briefly flashed for India when Harleen Deol was off the field, but Harmanpreet brushed it off, stating that India’s No.3 will be fit and fine for their next clash.
“I think she'll be fine for the next game (talking about Harleen's injury).”
India will now have to wait for four days before their next clash against Pakistan, on September 5 (Sunday), for which they will travel to Colombo.
