If Williamson was Indian, he would be the greatest player in the world: Vaughan

'You all say Virat Kohli is the best purely to get a few more clicks and likes, few more numbers,' the former England captain said

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has often been vocal on social media and he has struck once again. This time, he makes it clear that Kane Williamson would be the greatest player in the world. He further addes that agencies call Virat Kohli the best just to get 'clicks, likes and numbers.'

Kohli and Williamson will be up against each other when they come toe-to-toe in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, beginning from June 18 in Southampton.

“If Kane Williamson was Indian, he would be the greatest player in the world. But he’s not because you’re not allowed to say that Virat Kohli is not the greatest, because you’d get an absolute pelting on social media. So, you all say Virat is the best purely to get a few more clicks and likes, few more numbers following here. Kane Williamson, across formats, is equally the best. I think the way he plays, the calm demeanour, his humbleness, the fact that he is silent about what he does,” Vaughan told Spark Sport.

“Kane Williamson has mostly had success. I’m not just saying it because I’m speaking to you guys in New Zealand but I think Kane Williamson is right up there with the great players across the three formats and certainly matches Virat Kohli. It’s just that he doesn’t have the 100 million followers on Instagram and doesn’t earn the $30-40 million or whatever Virat gets every year for his commercial endorsements,” he added.

When it comes to the ICC Test rankings, Williamson currently leads the way at the top of the table, while Kohli, who has not scored an international century for two years now, is at fifth. Kohli is also among the top five batsmen in the world ODIs and T20Is.

Williamson, on the other hand, is ranked 34th in T20Is and 12th in the 50-over format.
