India had a forgettable day on July 25 (Friday) in Manchester, where they conceded a lead of 186 runs to England with three more wickets left to get. England scored 544/7 thanks to fifties from Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes, with Joe Root scoring a superb century.
India have their backs against the wall in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, and certain tactics employed by skipper Shubman Gill have not gone down well with many, one of them being former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar.
India have been criticised for bringing in Anshul Kamboj over more experienced bowlers like Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav. But the one area where the experts have been unhappy about is the late introduction of Washington Sundar, who came on to bowl in the 69th over.
“Can we assume that these decisions were taken solely by Shubman Gill? At this stage of his career, you'd expect him to get some inputs… or considering he has done so well as a batter, everybody has withdrawn, saying ‘this guy is getting into the zone’," Manjrekar said, on JioHotstar as reported by Hindustan Times.
"Because I can't see everyone agreeing to this kind of move. Bumrah, KL Rahul, or a Gambhir thinking Washi should not be bowled… come what may."
Sundar responded with the wickets of Harry Brook and Pope in quick succession to give India a bit of respite.
India will hope to get the remaining three wickets as quickly as possible on Day 4, and hope to restrict England to a lead of under 200, thereby giving them a chance to get something out of the game. England currently lead the five-match series 2-1.
