In the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against India in Dubai on March 4 (Tuesday), Australian captain Steve Smith got a lucky reprieve when he dragged one of Axar Patel’s deliveries back onto the stumps, but the bails refused to fall off.
The incident happened on the final delivery of the 14th over when Smith got a thick inside edge on a delivery angling in from left-arm spinner Axar. The ball hit his pad and then rolled to the stumps at a decent space. However, the zing bails didn’t light up, and Smith continued his innings.
On the previous ball of the same over, Varun Chakaravarthy had also missed out on a run-out opportunity. Smith flicked one to Chakaravarthy at fine leg and took off for a quick single. Marnus Labuschagne, however, wasn’t interested and sent him back.
There was a chance to get Smith out, but Chakaravarthy fumbled and failed to send the throw in time.
Earlier in the innings, Australia lost Cooper Connolly cheaply but Travis Head once again took the attack to India in the powerplay. The left-hander smashed 39 off 33 before falling to Chakravarthy.
