The craziest 58 balls witnessed in T20 history!

We look at all the records that were shattered by SRH in the clash against LSG on May 8th (Wednesday)

Well, it’s getting silly now. S̶u̶n̶r̶i̶s̶e̶r̶s̶ H̶y̶d̶e̶r̶a̶b̶a̶d̶  Actually scratch that, Travis Head & Abhishek Sharma keep SHATTERING RECORDS over and over and over again and it looks like they simply can’t or won’t stop.

There’s a lot to unpack so let’s cut to the chase already.

We witnessed a world record tonight. Yep, a WORLD RECORD! SRH were set a target of 166 by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and they chased it down in just 9.4 overs. Yep, that’s right. NINE POINT FOUR OVERS!  It’s the fewest number of balls taken by a side in T20 HISTORY to chase down a 150+ target.

SRH obliterated the previous IPL record for the fewest number of balls taken to chase a 150+ target. The previous record was 72 balls by Deccan Chargers way back in 2008.

Fewest balls taken to chase down a 150+ target in IPL

58 balls - Sunrisers vs Lucknow in 2024 (target 166)

72 balls - Deccan Chargers vs Mumbai Indians in 2008 (target 155)

79 balls - Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023 (target 150)

83 balls - Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings in 2008 (target 157)

Now, on to some Head & Abhishek stuff. The two left-handers added 167 runs together in 58 balls. It’s the second fastest-scoring 150+ run stand in T20 history!

Highest run rate for a 150+ run partnership in IPL history

17.27 - Travis Head & Abhishek Sharma vs LSG in 2024 (partnership 167*)

14.31 - Virat Kohli & AB de Villiers vs GL in 2016 (partnership 229)

13.81 - Albie Morkel & Murali Vijay vs RR in 2010 (partnership 152)

13.64 - Virat Kohli & Will Jacks vs GT in 2024 (partnership 166*)

Head continued his powerplay dominance and he’s on his way to absolutely shatter every powerplay record in the book. He’s now hit 72 boundaries in overs 1-6 this season, the joint-most in a single IPL season by any batter.

Most boundaries hit in the powerplay in an IPL season

72 boundaries in 176 balls - Travis Head in 2024

72 boundaries in 311 balls - David Warner in 2016

70 boundaries in 206 balls - Yashasvi Jaiswal in 2023

64 boundaries in 223 balls -  David Warner in 2015

Plus, only Warner (467 runs) has scored more runs than Head in the powerplay in a single IPL season.

Head, Abhishek and SRH broke, equalled or set a host of other records. Let’s look at some of them

> SRH became the first team in IPL history to score 100+ runs in the powerplay on two separate occasions.

> SRH’s 107/0 in the powerplay today was the highest powerplay score in the second innings of an IPL match (and the second highest overall). They went past the 105/0 posted by KKR back in 2017.

> SRH scored 167 runs in the 9.4 overs they batted — the most runs scored by a team in the first 10 overs of an innings in IPL history.

> SRH hit 30 boundaries in the 9.4 overs they batted — the most boundaries hit by a team in the first 10 overs of an innings in IPL history.

> Travis Head became only the second batter after Jake Fraser-McGurk to score three fifties in the IPL under 20 balls.

Unbelievably enough, in the same game in which SRH posted numbers like these, LSG had a game to forget with the bat.

On the night, Lucknow posted their lowest EVER powerplay score.

Lowest powerplay scores for LSG in IPL

27/2 vs SRH in 2024

30/1 vs SRH in 2023

30/1 vs DC in 2023

31/3 vs CSK in 2023

Their skipper KL Rahul, meanwhile, registered his lowest SR in an innings in which he’s faced 30+ balls.

Lowest SR for Rahul in an IPL innings (30+ balls)

87.88 - LSG vs SRH in 2024 (29 off 33)

106.45 - LSG vs GT in 2024 (33 off 31)

108.57 - RCB vs RPS in 2016 (38 off 35)

110.64 - PBKS vs RR in 2019 (52 off 47)

Finally, SRH (107/0) scored 80 more runs in the powerplay than what LSG managed (27/2) — the highest difference between the powerplay score of two sides in IPL history.
