After missing the playoffs by a whisker, five-time Indian Premier League winners Chennai Super Kings would want to make the wrongs right with a sixth title. However, for that to become a reality, they would want to utilise the impact player option to their best.
So, who are the three options CSK can use as an impact player in IPL 2025?
Anshul Kamboj has already introduced himself on the biggest stage when he played for Mumbai Indians in the 2024 Indian Premier League. Since then, the all-rounder has grown leaps and bounds, with a ten-wicket haul in an innings against Kerala in the 2024/25 edition of the Ranji Trophy.
The 24-year-old also shone brightly for Haryana in their 2024/25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he picked up 14 wickets, averaging 21.85. Not only is he a good new ball bowler, but the Haryana man can also contribute with the bat, with his strike rate of 171.42 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Vijay Shankar knows the impact player role quite well. The 33-year-old has spent much of the last two years playing that role for the Gujarat Titans, where he was particularly impressive in the 2023 season, scoring 301 runs, averaging 37.63 and striking at 160.11.
While he didn’t have the best of seasons last year (83 runs @16.60), CSK have the capability of extracting the best out of him. Not just that, in case the conditions prove to be fruitful, the Tamil Nadu man could roll his arm too, with nine IPL wickets @38.22.
There aren’t too many leg-spinners on song as Shreyas Gopal in the country. The Karnataka leg spinner finished the 2024 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 14 wickets while maintaining an incredible economy of 6.14.
Given that the conditions will likely aid spinners at Chepauk, Gopal’s leg spin could well and truly become a key point for CSK on a turning track. Add his batting, and he becomes quite a good option for the five-time IPL winners.
