Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20 captain had overtaken Hardik Pandya in the race to the captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired. However, at the franchise level in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he still plays under Pandya.
With rumours rife about Surya also being made the Mumbai Indians captain, taking over Pandya, Surya was posed a question by the media personnel in Gwalior, where India played their first match in 14 years.
“Aapne googly daal diya. Aage dekhte hain. Baaki aapko pata toh chal hee jayega (You have bowled a googly. Let’s see what happens in the future. You guys will get to know about it (laughs),” said the 34-year-old, who has led the Mumbai side in the absence of Rohit.
Currently, Surya is leading the Indian team against Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series. This is his fourth series as India captain, all of it coming after the 2023 ODI World Cup. He seems to be enjoying the role.
“Enjoying this new role. When I was playing under Rohit bhai’s captaincy in Mumbai Indians, I used to give my input on whatever I felt at that time. I captained against Sri Lanka earlier and led the teams against Australia and South Africa as well. I have learnt from other captains on how to take the team forward,” he said.
Surya is one of the most successful T20I batters of the Indian team and will be in great demand ahead of the 2025 IPL season. Mumbai would most likely leave no stone unturned to try and retain him.
