IPL 2025 once again was a season filled with an excellent showcase of batting and a terrific display of resilience by the bowlers. Some trends from the previous season continued this year, and a few new patterns also came up as the season progressed.
With Royal Challengers Bengaluru & Punjab Kings are set to face off in the IPL Final tomorrow (3rd June 2025) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Here is a look at the trends of this year's outstanding edition of the IPL:
Openers had an excellent IPL season as they took the responsibility of not just providing good starts for their respective teams, but also to make sure they scored with great consistency while maintaining a higher batting average. The opening wicket partnerships were outstanding as opening pairs like Sai Sudharsan - Shubman Gill, Priyansh Arya - Prabhsimran Singh and Virat Kohli - Phil Salt had some fantastic opening partnerships which laid a great foundation for big totals while batting first and sealed the chase in many cases while batting second.
The top three batters have dominated the run scoring in this IPL. Gujarat Titans were prime examples of the top three firing on all cylinders as their top three of Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler all smashed 500+ runs individually, becoming the first top three batter of a team to score 500+ runs in an IPL season. In total, seven batters batting in the top three scored 500+ runs, making it the joint-most in an IPL season.
The top three batters were scoring fifties for fun in IPL 2025. A total of 110 50+ scores were scored by the top three batters of all 10 teams combined, going the past the previous record of 109 in IPL 2023.
Middle-order batters have been making sure to maintain the high intent of scoring quickly in the middle overs. A trend that started in 2023 has managed to go up in 2024 and in 2025 as well and batters at 4-6 have been striking almost 150 collectively.
Lower-order batters have made sure to become better hitters of the ball as they have smashed 150+ sixes in the last three seasons. They have made sure to one-up the previous edition as we saw 155 sixes in 2023, 156 sixes in 2024 and 157 in this year's IPL. The likes of Tim David, Naman Dhir, and Shashank Singh have been the people behind the improvement of the lower-order batters.
Pacers have had a season to forget in IPL 2025. Even though they went at 9.78 in IPL 2024, they managed to take almost 600 wickets, balancing it out in the bowling SR. They year, they have managed just over 500 wickets and have touched almost 10 runs per over.
The bowling average of pacers has taken a hit in IPL 2025. All pacers have collectively averaged 32.0 in this year's IPL, making it the worst for them in almost six years, with the previous worst being in 2019.
Spinners have been terrific in the IPL this year. They have shown improvement in their wicket-taking ability in recent years. They have managed to take almost 300 wickets this year at a terrific bowling SR of 20.7, which is the best for them in an IPL season.
