Delhi Capitals (DC) will be returning to their OG home ground, the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, and will be hosting their remaining five home games there with the first one being against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday, 13th April 2025. The venue, which had a history of being slow, low and sluggish, turned into a batting paradise in IPL 2024 with batters feasting there.
Toss has gone wrong in most of the games in Delhi over the last two years as captains have chosen to bowl in nine of the 12 games. But teams batting first have won eight of those 12 games, thus nullifying the toss. The average 1st innings score of 200 is one of the highest at a venue in IPL in recent times.
Pacers have been hammered all over the ground as they have conceded runs at 10.2 economy, averaging above 30. Spinners on the other hand have been economical at 8.6.
Powerplay has been a headache for bowlers as both pace and spin has gone over 10 run per over. Spinners have averaged badly at 50.3 in this phase. The middle overs has seen the run-scoring come under control for the bowlers with spinners giving away only eight runs per over. The slog overs has seen spinners striking far better than pacers at 8.9.
2024 SAW DELHI TURN INTO A BATTING PARADISE
Arun Jaitley Stadium over the last two years was contrasting in its behavior as the 2023 season saw slow and sluggish surfaces, with the run rate barely being 8 RPO. However, this climbed up to 10.8 in 2024 as batters made the best use of flat tracks. There were 16 50+ scores in 10 innings during the 2024 season compared to 17 50+ scores in 14 innings in the 2023 season.
Batting in powerplay has been terrific in Delhi in recent times with the run rate going up to 10.5, which is the highest at a venue in IPL since 2023. Nearly 78.2% of these runs have been scored by boundaries in this phase.
BOWLERS WERE EXPENSIVE IN IPL 2024
Bowlers had a nightmare of a season in Delhi in 2024 with pacers going for 11.5 and spinners being hammered at 10.5 runs per over. However, batters taking more risks meant that wickets fell more often. The bowling SR in IPL 2024 was 18.6 and 17.3, respectively, for pace and spin, which was better than the 2023 edition.
Bowlers were expensive in all three phases in IPL 2024 in Delhi as they went at 12 runs in powerplay and slog overs compared to just nine runs per over in 2023.
Finger spinners, who had a history of doing well in Delhi, had a horrible year in 2024, going for 11.2 runs per over while averaging 36 runs per innings.
So, will batters continue to feast in Delhi in IPL 2025 as well?
