Josh Hazlewood to miss 2nd Ashes Test due to a side strain

The Australia fast bowler remains in contention to return for the Boxing Day Test

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the second Ashes day-night Test against England, scheduled to get underway from December 16 in Adelaide. Hazlewood suffered a side strain during his side's nine-wicket victory in the first Test at the Gabba. He, however, remains in contention to be a part of the Boxing Day Test.

Hazlewood flew home to Sydney on Sunday (December 12) for further assessment, and the rest of the Australian squad was travelling to Adelaide on Monday (December 13). Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser, who played a tour game for Australia A against the England Lions last week, are in Australia's squad as pace cover.

Hazlewood picked up the key wickets of Joe Root and Dawid Malan in his first three overs of the match to put England on the back foot after Mitchell Starc struck off the very first delivery of the series. The pacer's absence will be a huge blow for Australia as he has picked up 32 wickets at 19.90 from seven day-night Tests so far, which is the best after his opening partner Starc, who has 47 scalps at 18.86

After the first Test finished Saturday, Cummins said Hazlewood's injury is "nothing too serious."

"It wasn't scary enough to not bowl today. It was good he came out today and was able to bowl and get through a really good spell."
