Gujarat Titans (GT) are all set to sign Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis as replacement for the departing Jos Buttler, according to a report from Newswire Lanka.
Buttler has arguably been the best batter in IPL 2025, with 500 runs at an average of 71.43, but the former England captain will miss the playoffs due to England’s ODI series against the West Indies.
While it remains to be seen whether Buttler will return to India, play a couple of games and then leave, Newswire have reported that GT have already contacted Mendis. Dasun Shanaka, Mendis’ Sri Lanka teammate, also is representing GT in IPL 2025.
Regarded one of the most gifted strokemakers in the country, Mendis represented Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he scored 143 runs at a strike rate of 168.23.
Overall in his career, the 30-year-old has scored 4,718 T20 runs at an average of 30.24 and strike rate of 137.43.
Should GT sign him, Mendis will likely come straight into the XI for Buttler, with Anuj Rawat and Kumar Kushagra being the other two wicketkeepers in the squad.
It’s worth noting that GT will only be able to sign Mendis as a temporary replacement, meaning he won’t be eligible for retention at the start of next season.
