NEWSAfter leading Sri Lanka for two years, including the 2019 World Cup in England, Dimuth Karunaratne has made way for Kusal Perera to steer the ship of the Sri Lankan ODI side while Kusal Mendis has been appointed as his deputy. Even though under Karunaratne, Sri Lanka won a couple of home series against Bangladesh and West Indies, but recently losing 2-0 and 3-0 respectively to Pakistan and West Indies were the last straw - not only as captain but also as a player.
Sri Lanka's new selection committee Pramodya Wickramasinghe and coach Mickey Arthur have signalled a clear approach of giving more chances to young faces. While Karunaratne's performances have dropped drastically, Angelo Mathews' absence has come as a surprise. Mathews was in good form last year and in the 2019 World Cup, he was head and shoulder above every batsman. The selection committee has also decided to leave Dinesh Chandimal from the squad.
The series will see Kusal Perera being the 9th ODI captain in the last five years for Sri Lanka with Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Chamara Kapugedara, and Dimuth Karunaratne holding the position in the time frame.
The three matches between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be played on May 23, 25 and 28 respectively in Dhaka.
