NEWSSri Lanka wicketkeeper Kusal Perera has tested positive for Covid-19, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced in a media release. He was found positive after a PCR test conducted on Sunday (August 15).
"Wicketkeeper - Batsman Kusal Janith Perera has tested positive for Covid – 19. He was found to be positive during a PCR test which was carried out on the players yesterday," the SLC media release said.
"Following the detection, Perera is undergoing due medical protocols pertaining to Covid – 19," it further added.
Perera recently led Sri Lanka in the ODI series against Sri Lanka at home and was also the captain in the white-ball tour of England, where Sri Lanka were blanked 3-0 in the T20I series and lost the ODIs 2-0.
However, he was not available for selection for the home series against India due to a shoulder injury and it was all-rounder Dasun Shanaka who took over as the captain. The southpaw was appointed captain of the Sri Lankan side in May this year, ahead of the ODI series against Bangladesh, replacing Dimuth Karunaratne.
Sri Lanka are scheduled to host South Africa for a three-match ODI and T20I series, starting September 7. All the matches will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
Perera, who made his debut in 2013, has played 22 Tests, 107 ODIs and 50 T20Is for Sri Lanka so far.
