Shubman Gill’s batting outside India, before the tour of England in 2025, was the one that had a lot of debates going on. None, however, had even a slight mention of Gill being a great batter in overseas conditions.
However, the England tour just changed that perspective as he amassed 754 runs in five Tests at an average of 75.40 with four hundreds.
So how did this change come about? Gill, in a chat with India’s domestic cricket’s official broadcaster, JioHotstar, shared the details of his talk with former India batter and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s modern-day great Steve Smith.
“There was pressure of not doing well outside India. But I was feeling very confident in terms of my practice, mentally, and what positions I was getting into. I spoke to Sachin Sir and also took the (phone) number from Matthew Wade (who played with Gill in the IPL team) and spoke to Steve Smith,” Indian Express quoted Gill as saying to JioHotstar.
So what did both of them tell Gill? “Both said the same thing: defend straight and score square,” answered India’s Test skipper.
Gill, after improving his red-ball format, faced issues with the white ball in the Asia Cup 2025. Now, he is back playing red-ball cricket and thus, it would be interesting to see how he gets back to scoring big runs against the West Indies.
