Shubman Gill started the tour of England with an average of 14.67 in the country and had a point to prove as a batter, let alone as captain. He has answered one part of it with a sumptuous century at Headingley - his first outside the subcontinent on June 20 (Friday). It was a classy innings from the new India skipper, and he built an excellent partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal and continues to grind it out with Rishabh Pant.
With his sixth Test century, Gill has achieved something that many greats, including Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, and Ricky Ponting, had not achieved. He has become the third youngest visiting captain to slam a ton in England and the youngest Indian.
22y 173d - Graeme Smith (SA) vs ENG, Birmingham, 2003
24y 44d - Javed Burki (PAK) vs ENG, Lord's, 1962
25y 285d - Shubman Gill (IND) vs ENG, Leeds, 2025*
25y 324d - Billy Murdoch (AUS) vs ENG, The Oval, 1880
Gill is also only the fourth Indian to score a ton in the first innings of his captaincy debut.
Vijay Hazare - 164* vs ENG, Delhi, 1951
Sunil Gavaskar - 116 vs NZ, Auckland, 1976
Virat Kohli - 115 vs AUS, Adelaide, 2014
Shubman Gill - 103* vs ENG, Leeds, 2025
India have also gone past 300 and with seven wickets intact. They are in a commanding position, thanks to some top-class batting from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and KL Rahul (42). Rishabh Pant has also supported Gill well and is looking set to get another big score.
Earlier, England won the toss and invited India to bat. The visitors have been on top ever since, frustrating the English bowling unit.
