Shubman Gill finally won a toss in his seventh Test as Indian captain and elected to bat first against West Indies on Day 1 of the second and final Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 10 (Friday).
A loss at the toss in this match would have seen Gill equal former New Zealand skipper Bevan Congdon’s record for the most Tests as captain before winning a toss.
Most Tests As Skipper Before Winning A Toss
Bevan Congdon (New Zealand) - 7
Tom Latham (New Zealand) - 6
Shubman Gill (India) - 6*
Having taken a 1–0 lead in the two-match series after their emphatic innings and 140-run victory in Ahmedabad, many expected India to rest Jasprit Bumrah, who has been playing non-stop cricket since the Asia Cup 2025. However, that hasn’t happened - the hosts have gone with an unchanged playing XI for the Delhi Test.
Fortunately for Bumrah, India’s comprehensive win in the first Test was wrapped up inside three days, and the ace pacer bowled only 20 overs across two innings. In Ahmedabad, India declared at 448/5 in 128 overs, before bundling out West Indies for 162 and 146 in a combined 89.2 overs.
Meanwhile, Roston Chase’s side have made two changes to their lineup. Brandon King and Johann Layne make way for Tevin Imlach and Anderson Phillip.
While right-arm seamer Phillip has featured in only three Tests, and wicketkeeper-batter Imlach in just two, both have pretty good first-class records. Phillip has claimed 155 wickets in 47 matches at an average of 25.27, while Imlach has amassed 1792 runs in 32 games at an average of 35.84, including six centuries and eight fifties.
