Stats Highlights: MI first team to chase 200+ in consecutive games

A few eye-popping stats from Match 46 of IPL 2023 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians

Once again, Punjab posted 200+ total, and Mumbai pulled off another heist. In consecutive matches against Rajasthan Royals (213) and today against Punjab, Mumbai have managed to gun down 215 to register wins. There were plenty of stats from the game, and here are a few:

Mumbai chased 200+ in consecutive matches

In the IPL, Mumbai became the first team to chase 200+ targets in consecutive matches. They chased 213 against Rajasthan and 215 against Punjab today.

The target of 215 that was hunted down by Mumbai is also their second-highest target in IPL history. Their highest came against Chennai Super Kings (219) in 2021 in Delhi.

In Mohali, this is the first-ever 200+ target chased in the IPL and overall in all T20s as well, Mumbai's chase is the best at the venue.

In 2020, Rajasthan chased a target of 224 against Punjab. Mumbai's chase is the second-best against the franchise in IPL history. Mumbai joined Punjab in 2014 and Chennai in 2018 to chase 200+ totals in a single season twice.

Four in four for Punjab

In the IPL, Punjab became the first team to post 200+ totals in four consecutive innings. The streak started against Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. Kolkata Knight Riders, in this season itself, posted three.

Mumbai and Punjab concede 200+ totals in four successive games

Mumbai are winning games, but that has been purely because of their batting. In the last four matches, they have conceded 200+ totals in each of their innings, the joint-longest streak.

We say joint-longest because Punjab scored 200+ in four games on the trot but also yielded as many runs in as many games. A fitting battle.

Suryakumar is back to his best

In the first five games, he averaged 13.2 and had a strike rate of 140.4. However, in his last four games, he has been striking at 205.1 with an average of 50.25. In this match, he registered a half-century in 23 balls, his joint-fastest in the IPL.

Interestingly, the other 23-ball fifty came against the same team in the reverse fixture.

Rohit bags his 15th duck

Rohit is enjoying success as a captain, but as a batter, he has been horrible this season. Against Punjab, he bagged his 15th duck in the IPL, the joint-most for a batter.

As a captain, this was his 10th, which remains the joint-most alongside now LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir. Rohit has registered three ducks against Punjab, and all of them have been since he took over as the captain.

Few other stats

Arshdeep Singh conceded 66 runs in 3.5 overs. This is the joint-third-most runs conceded in an innings by any bowler. Basil Thampi, in 2018 against Bangalore, conceded 70, and Yash Dayal, against Kolkata earlier this year, gave away 69 runs.

Jofra Archer, in his innings, leaked 56 runs in four overs. In all T20s, that is the most runs he has conceded in an innings. A leak.

Mumbai scored 116 runs in the middle overs (7-15) in this innings. Only against Rajasthan in 2014, they scored more runs (124) in an innings in this phase.

The first game of today's double-header between Lucknow and Chennai ended in a washout. In the IPL, this is only the sixth no-result game (excluding abandoned matches). The first happened in Delhi, and the next four were in Bengaluru.

Krunal Pandya captaining for the first time in the IPL suffered a golden duck. He became the third captain (VVS Laxman) to be dismissed for a duck and the second after Aiden Markram to suffer a golden duck on their captaincy debut.
