Rohit records 5th ton in first-ever T20I double super over

A few noteworthy stats from the 3rd T20I between India and Afghanistan in Bengaluru

The match started on a dull note but picked up after the first ten overs. The actual flatness of the M Chinnaswamy was witnessed when Rohit Sharma set the stage ablaze with a scintillating ton.

What followed after that was just bliss for the fans present in Bengaluru. Afghanistan dragged the game to a double super over but fell short. Nevertheless, the match had intensity and plenty of records:

Rohit smashes fifth T20I ton

-With an unbeaten 121, Rohit became the first batter in T20Is to register five tons. Suryakumar Yadav and Glenn Maxwell are behind with four.

-This was Rohit's third ton as a captain in T20Is, which is the joint-most alongside Babar Azam

-With eight sixes in this innings, Rohit has 90 maximums as a captain in the format. On Wednesday, he went past Eoin Morgan's tally of 86.

-Overall, in all T20s, he has 258 sixes as a skipper. Only MS Dhoni has more than him (276). He went past Kieron Pollard's record of 252.

-In the last ten overs, Rohit smashed 94 runs, the fourth-most runs scored by a batter in the second half of the innings in T20Is.

-In all T20s, this score of 121* is Rohit's personal best. Before this game, he had scored 118 against Sri Lanka in 2017. For India, this is the fourth-best score.

India's best partnership

-The unbeaten 190-run partnership between Rinku Singh and Rohit is the highest partnership for India in T20Is.

-In all T20s, no pair has posted a higher partnership for fifth or lower wicket than Rohit and Rinku after losing four for less than 25 runs. Previously, Adam Hose and Dan Mousley for Birmingham Bears posted 171 for the fifth wicket from 4/20 against Northants in 2020.

-In all T20s, only Ifthikar Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan (192*) for Fortune Barishal in 2023 against Rangpur Riders have a higher partnership for fifth or lower wicket.

India's last-minute onslaught

-In the last two overs of the innings, India smashed 58 runs, which is the most by a team in T20Is in the 19th and 20th.

-India amassed 103 runs in the last five overs. Only Nepal, against Mongolia in the Asian Games 2023, have hit more runs in this phase (108). Among full members, India hold the record.

-India smashed seven fours and nine sixes in the last five, a total of 16 boundaries, the most by a team in overs between 16 and 20.

-In the 20th over, India scored 36 runs, the joint-most by a team in an over in T20Is.

Afghanistan's best batting display against the top nine

-Afghanistan's top three registered a 50+ score in this innings, making this the first instance for them against India, and the sixth overall in T20Is.

-This was the first time Afghanistan registered a 200+ total against the top nine ranked teams. Previously, their highest was against Sri Lanka in 2022 (175/6).

-Gulbadin Naib became the sixth Afghan batter to hit consecutive 50+ scores in T20Is. Mohammad Shahzad has done it twice (2015 & 2017).

-The 12 sixes hit by Afghanistan in this innings are also the most for them in an innings against the top nine ranked teams.

In total, they hit 27 boundaries, 15 fours, and 12 sixes, the most for them against the top nine.

A double super over

-In all T20s, this was only the second double super over, the first in an international T20. The other instance in T20s was in 2020 between Mumbai Indian and Kings XI Punjab in Dubai.

-India have been unbeaten in a Tied match so far. They have been involved in five tied games, winning four, three in super overs, and one in bowl out (vs PAK in 2007).

They won in a super over in back-to-back matches against New Zealand in 2020. The other one remained a tie as the scores were leveled via DLS, and further play was not possible.

Few other stats

-Virat Kohli suffered his first golden duck in T20Is.

-In total, Kohli has five ducks, and in four of those, Rohit has been in the XI. Out of those four, only once has Rohit scored below 70.

-In international cricket, this was Kohli's 35th duck, 14 in Tests, 16 in ODIs, and five in T20Is. These are the most for an Indian top-seven batter across formats. He went past Sachin Tendulkar's tally of 34.

-In all T20s, only two other teams - Wellington (228/8) against Central District in 2022 and Jamaica Tallawahs (225/6) against Trinbago Knight Riders in 2018 - have posted 200+ totals after losing four wickets for less than 25 runs.

-Rohit and Ravi Bishnoi are the first two players to be involved in a double super over (present in playing XI) twice, and Bishnoi is the first to win multiple double superovers.
