Mumbai batter Suryakumar Yadav fell for just nine runs in his Ranji Trophy return against Haryana in Kolkata on February 8 (Saturday). He last played in the Ranji Trophy in October 2024 against Maharashtra in Mumbai, where he scored seven in his only innings.
In the ongoing quarter-final fixture, Suryakumar was bowled by pacer Sumit Kumar, bringing an end to his five-ball stay, which included a couple of boundaries. His wicket left Mumbai in a precarious situation at 25/4 in just the eighth over of the match.
The onus will now be on skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube to resurrect the innings. Suryakumar, who made his Test debut against Australia in February 2023, has played just five first-class matches since then. Two of them have come in the Ranji Trophy, while three came in the 2023 Duleep Trophy.
He was dismissed for just eight in his only Test innings, and since then, he has registered scores of 7, 52, 8, 4, 5, 16, 7 and now 9 in red-ball cricket. While he continues to shine as India's T20 International skipper, his form at the first-class level has been poor, to say the least.
