There are wins that tend to change the course of history for a side, and the Indian Women’s side on October 30 (Thursday) completed one such victory by slaying Australia in the semi-final of the World Cup to progress to the final.
Australia entered the match as overwhelming favourites, and pretty much no one gave the Indian Women a chance after the defending champions racked up 338 batting first. And yet, what followed was India pulling off the greatest chase in women’s cricket history as they got to the target with 9 balls to spare.
The charge was led by Jemimah Rodrigues, who finished unbeaten on 127* and took the team over the line to help them end Australia’s 15-match winning streak in World Cups.
In the aftermath of the win, former India skipper Virat Kohli shared special words for the Indian women’s side for downing ‘mighty’ Australia.
“What a victory by our team over a mighty opponent like Australia. A great chase by the girls and a standout performance by Jemimah in a big game. A true display of resilience, belief, and passion. Well done, Team India,” Kohli wrote on X.
India will take on South Africa in the final of the World Cup on November 2 (Sunday). Both teams have never gotten their hands on the trophy, so a first-time winner is guaranteed.
