Shubman Gill has had the experience of playing under various captains right from the start of his career at junior level for Punjab. He played under Abhishek Sharma’s captaincy and then, while graduating to national level junior cricket, he played under Prithvi Shaw in the U-19 World Cup.
From there on, in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he was first part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) under Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik and then played two seasons under Hardik Pandya at Gujarat Titans (KKR). At the national level, he played under both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Tests.
Now that Gill himself is a captain, it is pertinent to know what lessons he took from every level of cricket to incorporate into his own captaincy.
Speaking to former India and IPL player Karthik, who was his captain at KKR once, Gill differentiated between two of the great Indian captains- Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Talking about Virat, Gill, in the Sky Sports Cricket interview, which went on air on June 15, said, “His proactivity in the Test matches. Be it in the field or with ideas, or with his thinking. That is something that I liked, and I have picked up on. If he thought that a certain plan was not working, he would immediately switch to an alternative.”
On the other hand, Rohit, to Gill, is a tactical master. "He is a tactically aggressive captain, and he is very clear with his communication, be it during a match, prior to a series or after the series. The kind of environment that Rohit Bhai creates, like even when he is swearing at you, you would not take it to your heart,” the right-handed batter said about Rohit’s captaincy approach.
“That’s just kind of his personality, and that’s a great trait to have. He is sometimes harsh on you, but you know that it’s not coming from his heart, it’s coming from a team’s perspective,” he added.
