Defending champions of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) won an absolute humdinger of an encounter in Antigua on August 30 (Friday) to get off to a winning start in CPL 2024.
Chasing 169, Guyana needed 16 to win off the final over with Dwaine Pretorius on strike. After Pretorius went 0 4 4 0 4 in the first five balls bowled by Mohammad Amir, the Warriors needed four to win off the final ball.
Amir went wide of off-stump, but Pretorius sensationally muscled the ball, which was nowhere close to his arc, over wide long off to seal a thrilling win for the Warriors.
At one point, Guyana needed 47 to win off the last three overs. They looked dead and buried but a superb cameo from Romario Shepherd (32 off 16) set up the final over heist for Pretorius. It is worth pointing out that, with Guyana needing 22 off 7 balls, Shamar Joseph smashed a six to make the equation doable for Pretorius.
Earlier in the night, a spell of 3/25 from Gudakesh Motie had helped the Warriors restrict Antigua to 168/6.
The result means that Antigua have lost two in a row, both gut-wrenching final ball defeats.
