In what comes as a surprise, Virat Kohli has not been named in the XI against England in the first One-Day International (ODI) in Nagpur. In Kohli's absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been handed his ODI debut.
But why is Kohli not playing this game, and what is the severity of his injury? Skipper Rohit Sharma said Kohli missed out due to a knee injury.
"Unfortunately, Virat isn't playing, he had a knee problem last night," the India skipper said.
The last time Kohli missed an ODI due to an injury was in 2022 against England at The Oval due to a groin strain. According to reports, Kohli was seen walking gingerly during the practice sessions with strapping around his right knee. It remains unclear if he will be fit in time for the second ODI in Cuttack on February 9 (Sunday).
The former India skipper, who is part of India's Champions Trophy squad, is just 94 runs away from becoming the third player with 14,000 runs in the format.
