Bumrah fit but Siraj, Samson axed as India name Champions Trophy squad

There is a maiden ODI call-up for Yashasvi Jaiswal, but, interestingly, Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain

In what comes as a huge boost for team India, ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been named in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Bumrah picked up a back injury in the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney and was a major doubt for the mega event. However, he’s been named in the provisional 15-man squad for the event.

Bumrah has been picked for the three-match ODI series against England, too, but his participation in those ODIs is subject to fitness. Harshit Rana has thus been named as standby for the series and will likely play the first two ODIs. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that he does not expect Bumrah to be fit for the first two ODIs of the England series.

Veteran Mohammed Shami also returns to the ODI setup for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup, but there is no place in India’s squad for Mohammed Siraj. The omission of Siraj comes as a shock, as only Kuldeep Yadav (53) has taken more ODI wickets for the Men in Blue since the start of 2023.

Speaking of Kuldeep, the left-arm wrist-spinner has been declared fit after missing the Australia tour due to a groin injury. He is one of four spinners in the squad, with Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel being the other three. There is no place in the squad for Varun Chakaravarthy, who is the highest wicket-taker among spinners in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.

There is a maiden ODI call-up for Yashasvi Jaiswal, but interestingly, Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain, suggesting that the right-hander will continue to open alongside Rohit Sharma. The trio of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who constituted the side’s middle-order in the 2023 ODI World Cup, will likely retain their spots in the Champions Trophy first XI as well.

Rishabh Pant has been picked but his inclusion has pushed out Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, there is no place in the squad for Suryakumar Yadav, who featured in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Karun Nair, who has been smashing records in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy edition, has not been picked either.

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who is the highest wicket-taker in the ongoing edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, completes the squad.
