Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from T20Is, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had said that you need to be an all-format player to receive the highest A+ category of central contracts, but that could change when the national contracts are announced for the next season.
According to a report in the Times of India, the three aforementioned stars are likely to be retained in the A+ category despite playing two formats. “All three will be retained in the highest category, along with Jasprit Bumrah,” said a source.
Shreyas Iyer, who wasn’t given a contract last year, is set to regain his contract. The middle-order batter was India’s leading run-getter in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which the Men in Blue won by defeating New Zealand in the final.
Meanwhile, Axar Patel is also set to get at least the A contract. The spin-bowling all-rounder from Gujarat, who played a key role in India winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, has become an important member of India’s white-ball teams. Axar also plays for India in home Tests.
Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Kumar Reddy are set to get their maiden contracts. R Ashwin, who has retired from international cricket, will naturally be released from the contract.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir are set to meet in Guwahati on March 30.
