India captain Shubman Gill had a brainfade moment on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, leaving an incoming delivery from Ben Stokes and getting trapped LBW just before the end of the second session.
India were 149/2 in 49 overs when an error in judgment cost Gill his wicket. As he has done on many occasions, Stokes bowled from slightly wide of the crease and got the ball to come back in with the angle. The delivery nipped back just enough, but Gill misjudged the line and assumed it was missing the stumps.
He offered no shot, and the moment the ball struck him on the kneeroll of the front pad, Stokes and the England team were confident they had their man. Gill hesitantly opted for a review, but replays confirmed that the ball would have gone on to hit the off-stump.
Gill managed just 12 runs off 23 balls, registering his third consecutive failure of the series. After a blazing start with scores of 147, 8, 269, and 161 in his first four innings, he now has scores of 16, 6, and 12 in his last three.
Interestingly, Karun Nair, who has been dropped for this game, had made a similar mistake in a previous fourth Test, shouldering arms to a nip-backer from Brydon Carse and losing his wicket.
