Shubman Gill became only the second Indian captain after Virat Kohli to score centuries in his first two matches as skipper and that asserted his dominance in the side quite firmly. While his efficacy as a batter in SENA conditions was always under the scanner, he has redeemed himself successfully with twin tons, but he has brought a new challenge upon himself because of his captaincy.
There have been a few contentious selection decisions, including dropping Sai Sudharsan after just one match, opting against picking Kuldeep Yadav in favour of extra batting depth, and placing too much reliance on all-rounders instead of specialist bowlers. While Gill has faced some scrutiny, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal came to his defense, stating that the new skipper is very clear-headed about his approach and has a strong vision for the team.
"I think he's been amazing the way he's batting. It's just incredible to see him bat, and as a captain, also, he's been amazing. I think he's very clear in his head what he needs to do with the team, and we are very confident about what we are going to do. So, yeah, we are just trying our best,” Jaiswal said of Gill.
Earlier, after the toss, former Indian skippers Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri were baffled at the selection calls, particularly about resting Jasprit Bumrah for Edgbaston despite a seven-day break between the first and second Test. "No, there is no confusion," he stated. But Jaiswal revealed that there is no confusion.
"No, there is no confusion," he stated.
Jaiswal himself has been in tremendous touch with the bat, and after a century in the first Test at Leeds, he scored a flawless 87 at Edgbaston before Ben Stokes induced a bottom-edge. It was quite an uncharacteristic dismissal of him, but he is more focused on finding solutions in the future.
"It is disappointing to get out like that, but it is part of the game. But I want to enjoy the game at the same time. I try to find a solution that can be good in this situation (when he is challenged). Plans are always in the mind," said Jaiswal.
